2002 First Leg Tour Dates
The death of John Entwistle occurred the day
before this leg was to have begun. The band decided to go on with the tour both
as a tribute to John, whose family believed he would have wanted them to do
so, and out of commitments to the entire Who extended family and concerns over
the negative financial impact facing ALL (including John's estate) if they were
to have completely canceled. It was not an easy decision to have to have made.
The first two shows were postponed, and the tour began on July 1st at The Hollywood
Bowl.

An
emotional opening night for sure. The band came on at 8:45 and played until
almost 11pm. The preshow video by sponsor JBL featured the rehearsal footage,
with John getting rousing cheers every time he was seen. Three songs in, Roger
talked about how John's spirit is in the music. Two songs later, Pete was
explaining how the venue resembled female reproductive organs ... He did mention
after Baba that the evening was hard for everyone, commenting about how someone
he knew in the front row felt the need to leave. The post-show reports filed
by fans on all outlets of the internet seemed to say that the evening was
a powerful and healing experience.

Listening To You
"If it wasn't obvious before, it is crystal-clear
now: Never underestimate the Who. Delivering a two-hour-plus performance
that simply had no right being so astonishing, the band defied dismal expectations
and confounded cynics, this one included."
"... An all-"Tommy" suite for an encore - nonstop from "Pinball
Wizard" to "Amazing Journey" to "Sparks" to "See
Me, Feel Me" - was icing, however rapidly melting. To be blunt, it
was a jaw-dropping performance. - Ben
Wener - Orange County Register, 070202

Listening To You
"Then came
Zak ... joined the band in 1999 [sic], and the August 2000 show at the then-Sacramento
Valley Amphitheatre was a revelation. Here was someone who could match the
feel and fury of Moon's highly unorthodox drumming style without mimicking
it. He even looked a bit like Moon ...
The Who that night was as good as ever, with Starkey pushing
guitarist-singer Pete Townshend to a furious pitch. Suddenly, despite the
lack of any material newer than 20 years old, The Who seemed young again.
On Thursday night, Starkey suddenly seemed like a veteran
member of the group, because The Who needed to absorb another new member:
bassist Pino Palladino ...
... Despite their familiarity, the band attacked the
songs with vigor, Starkey and Townshend pushing each other in the frequent
instrumental sections that have always been one of The Who's musical distinctions.
Starkey is proving himself particularly adept at the "rave-up"
style of jamming that British bands of the mid-'60s, particularly The Who
and The Yardbirds, introduced to British rock. In the rave-up, the band
establishes a whirlpool groove of notes and rhythms, building it in intensity
until it explodes. - David
