GALLERY is up and running! Check out photos taken by me - Kathy VanTassell, and my partner in crime Deb Wakeford! A big THANK YOU to Deb for loaning me one of her digital cameras for this tour - ta! |
A
fantastic show! The band was tight, confident and relaxed, despite Johnny's
admission of nerves over it being the first time they'd played the States.
"Can't speak for everyone else, but I've been shittin' myself!" Well, you'd
never have known it from his delivery or stage presence. ![]() |
Tickets were $20. AN ABSOLUTELY KILLER SHOW!!! The opening night miss-cues were sorted out, and the band was on fire! Johnny was also having a grand time interacting with the crowd. Set

- SOLD OUT - This has go to be the smallest, most intimate stage yet!
And if that wasn't enough, the room has great sound! This show was pushed
back 1.5 hours due to the band's last minute call to appear on The Late Show
with David Letterman. The sound check was handled by only the techs, as the
band never set foot on the stage until showtime! There was also an additional
opening act - (Elizabeth Harper?). Mellodrone cut a song or two, as did the
Healers (boo!). It seems all the running around had caught up with them, as
they appeared ever so slightly worn out ...
-
SOLD OUT - From the smallest stage on to the largest so far - complete
with drum riser and fancy lighting! There appeared to be some sound problems
from where I was - up against the stage between Johnny and James. I had a
difficult time hearing James, and then he would suddenly overpower everything
on the stage. Not sure if that was a stage monitoring problem or if it effected
the house sound, but it did eventually even out. As the set drew to a close,
Johnny announced to the band 'Another Day', but the guitar wasn't ready, so
he went on to "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" again with Alonza
on keys and Zak on light percussion. Afterward, he skipped straight to "Last
Ride". Shame, I really love the bass groove of "Another Day".

Well, it seems 'Detroit Rock City' likes to rock sitting
down. Hmmm ... strange. The majority of people dragged chairs onto the
main floor and SAT for the show!?! The Healers managed to put up a good
show anyway, even though they again cut "Another Day" ;-(
from the set. The band actually physically LEFT the stage after 'Need It' and returned a few minutes later for their encore (maybe they needed to sit a spell?). Set List: Long Gone, Caught Up, Here It Comes, Down On The Corner, All Out Attack, You Are The Magic, InBetweens, Don't Think Twice, Last Ride, Need It Encore: Something To Shout About, Bangin' On more photos in the gallery |
An enthusiastic, energetic, upright crowd helped feed the band's own energies
tonight! The venue sported a rather elaborate light show as compared to previous
shows (which to some seemed a bit distracting - but consensus was that the
light sticks around the drums was very cool!). The event was recorded by a
local radio station for future broadcast (possibly XRT?? 2/2??). Besides cheekily
claiming the authorship of "Don't Think Twice", Johnny reinstated
"ANOTHER DAY" - yeah!![]() |

One
of the highlights: The opening act - Mellowdrone
- Jon and Scott are the nicest guys and can really rock. Was impressed by
the very first Maxwells performance, and they just got stronger and stronger
as the tour went on. Tonight they were on fire and the crowd knew and appreciated
it to the max. Absolutely amazing! These guys won't be opening acts for much
longer - Keep your eye out for 'em. Johnny too has been praising them, and
tonight, he invited Jon onstage to sing backup during the gorgeous rendition
of "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright". Beautiful.
We
arrived earlier than any other gig, placing us about 6th on line. Fan #1 had
been there since 2:30PM!! Again, hard-core, friendly, musically interesting
people on line. The video crew came out prior to the doors opening to get
some 'fan reactions' on tape. Once inside, our favorite standing spots were
taped off for the camera guys - damn! So I spent the night 2 feet to the left
of my fave spot, with only a now and again glimpse of Alonza, a slightly limited
view of Johnny, a full view of Zak and James, and the back ass of a pro-video
cam nearly knocking me in the head. But the band was really grooving, and
the crowd was fired up as well. Jon of Mellowdrone (whose opening set was
killer!!) once again joined Johnny for "Don't Think Twice". Should
be a can't miss DVD!! Celebs spotted tonight included Clem Burke.
