Moroccan Cancer Fund Benefit Concert
Early 1980's:
At some point during the two years or so that Mono Pacific
was together, their list of appearances included a set at this benefit in Morocco.
On May 11, 1985 a football stand caught fire and killed 55 people and injured some 200. Ex-Pacemaker Gerry Marsden brought together a cast of thousands to re-record the old hit Pacemaker's hit "You'll Never Walk Alone" - by now a popular football anthem to raise funds to help the victims and their families. Releases May 24, 1985 it was #1 for nine weeks.

was Little Steven VanZandt's project to heighten awareness and raise money to
help fight the Apartheid conditions in South Africa. The title track features
both Ringo Starr and Zak Starkey - father and son drum together for the
first time!

This
is a various artist 2 disc compilation was released in November of 1986 to benefit
The Phoenix House Charity. It includes specially recorded tracks by Paul McCartney,
Elvis Costello, Ringo Starr, Holly Johnson, as well as donated song tracks from
people like Saxon to Wham. Zak joins Ringo, The Thompson Twins, Howard
Jones, Bonnie Tyler, Kate Robbins (McCartney’s cousin), and others on the album’s
title track. He *may* also appear on others.

This
concert featured a mixed bag of artists from the UK and the US. Zak Starkey
was a member of John Entwistle's "super group" that backed many of
the artists that day. A video release titled Stand By Me: Aids Day Benefit
has 60 minutes of "highlights". Featured artists are: George Michael, Elton
John, Boy George, and many others.

In 1989, the horrendous state of Romania's orphanages was brought to the attention of the world. Olivia Harrison personally went to Romania to find out how funds already donated by Apple Records could best be used, and as a result, she founded the Romanian Angel Appeal.
Ringo contributed "With A Little Help From My Friends" recorded live at The Greek Theatre in LA, from the 1989 All-Starr Tour. Zak was sitting in on drums that evening.

The

January 11, 2000
Standing in for his dad at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Liverpool, Zak handed over the keys of a £28,000 specially equipped minibus to a representative of the Sandfield Park Special School from West Derby. Held
to celebrate Tony's [then] recovery from his recent illness, only 300 tickets
were made available. The musical guests come from all eras of Tony's work, and
included a short set of Rock (and Who) classics performed by John Entwistle,
Zak Starkey, John Rabbit Bundrick and Gary Nuttall.

Royal Albert Hall, Nov 27, 2000
The
Who (with Zak on drums) headlined this all-star charity concert London’s Royal
Albert Hall, which included special guests like Noel Gallagher and Eddie Vedder,
Paul Weller and comedian Phil Jupitus.
All all proceeds from the event will be donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust,
which helps to build hospital units which are specially tailored for teenagers.
The show was aired in December on pay-per-view in the U.K.
A DVD, The Who and Friends at the Royal Albert Hall, is due in Spring
2001.

April 20, 2001 - Astoria, London
To mark the 10th year since the passing of legendary guitarist Steve Marriott, a celebration of his work took place at the Astoria on April 20, 2001. The event featured many guest musicians whom were inspired by Steve's work. Any profits were to be donated to The Small Faces Charitable Trust.

To help raise funds, the Holyport Manor special needs school in Berkshire, UK auctioned off an Ringo Starr autographed drum skin. The item was donated by Zak Starkey.
July 29, 2001 - Madison Square Garden, NYC
This night's event benefited the ABC Trust Charity. Gary Moore was originally
scheduled, but due to a throat infection, had to cancel. Instead, Bernie Marsden,
Phil Spalding and Zak Starkey filled in last minute!

The
Who, with Zak on drums, participated in the multi-artist event to raise money
for Robin Hood Foundation's special Robin Hood Relief Fund - to benefit those
affected by the World Trade Center attacks.

Tony
Ashton passed away in May of 2001. A large number of his famous and talented
friends gathered to raised money for the Tony Ashton Memorial Fund.
Zak Starkey, Bernie, Mickey, Phil Spalding did a four song set of Beatles
covers!

The Who, with Zak on drums, played 2 dates of TEEN SPIRIT - a week-long string
of concerts by various artists to once again support this charity. Tickets went
on sale (with VERY little notice!!!) Dec 7th, 2001. Rumor had it the band was
planning to perform TOMMY in its entirety...

March 16, 2002 - Star Room, The Sporting Club, Monte-Carlo, Monaco
This annual Ball is held to benefit The Princess Grace Foundation. This years
theme was "POP" and the venue was done up like an Austin Powers set.
Providing the entertainment was Marianne Faithful and Ringo Starr - backed by
a band featuring Zak Starkey and others!

This
charity concert organized by members of Genesis was held to benefit The White
Lotus School, Ladakh and The Tibet House Trust. The evening consisted of guest
artists performing Beatles songs, with Ringo himself closing the show! Ringo's
backup band for the evening included: Zak Starkey (drums), Ian McNabb (bass),
Bernie Marsden (guitar), Peter Gordeno (keyboard) and Dave Caitlin-Birch (guitar)

The
Who, with Zak again on drums, returned to this 1,300 capacity venue, with the
proceeds going to this children's charity.

backed by friends including Zak performed at this event to benefit the Fulfillment
Fund, a non-profit organization that provides economically disadvantaged students
with the resources, tools and skill needed to graduate from high school and
obtain an advanced education. The even raised over $3.5 million.

The Who, with Zak on drums, again showed their support for this charity by
appearing one day during the week-long string of concerts by various artists.
Although billed as the Who performing Tommy, they instead did their fairly standard
set that featured numbers from Tommy in the encore.

Bernie Marsden (ex-Whitesnake) is putting together an All-Star Line-Up for
a day of live music to benefit Cancer Research UK and The National Kidney Research
Fund. So far Zak is on of the confirmed participants.

Zak managed to collect very neat and clear signatures from the entire band OASIS on a drum skin while at Glastonbury. It was up for auction on EBAY.CO.UK (for shipment within UK only) Auction began Aug 28th, ended Sept 7th. The high bid was £185.00
The skin was being auctioned to raise money for The Addington School - a special
needs school in Woodley (Reading) for children aged 2-19 who have a range of
disabilities with associated motor, sensory and behavioural difficulties.

The Who, with Zak on drums, closed the week-long string of concerts by various artists to once again support this charity. Tickets went on sale Feb 2, 2007 after the announcement Feb 1st!.
A DVD with three tracks was also released in 2008.

Bernie Marsden (ex-Whitesnake) originally put together an All-Star Line-Up for a day of live music to benefit Cancer Research UK and The National Kidney Research Fund. This is the third event (Zak was not there in 2005) and though the charities are Kidney and Cancer related, they are focused on care and support. Zak, Roger Daltrey, Simon Townshend, John "Rabbit" Bundrick are just some of this years participants!
